The Post and Telecommunication Department (“PTD”) under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (“MOTC”), announced, on October 20th, 2016 the results of the 2600 MHZ spectrum auction held October 17th-19th, 2016 in Nay Pyi Taw. The auction was held with assistance from the World Bank.

The winners included: Fortune International Limited, Global Technology Company Limited, Amara Communications Company Limited and Yatanarpon Teleport Company Limited. The auctions brought in a total of $244.16 million USD. The winning companies have the right to use the designated spectrum in each area for a period of 15 years.

Initially, it was expected that major telecom operators in Myanmar including MPT, Telenor and Ooredoo would participate in the auction. However, due to the spectrum allocated and a number of time constraints the major operators stated they would wait for the next round of auctions. The next auction is believed to include the 1800 MHZ spectrum band which is more suitable for the rollout of next generation 4G networks.
